I hear that this can cause problems for some versions of Norton AV,
which doesn't seem to like it when the connectoid for the always-on
connection disappears.  Perhaps it's the same for AOL.

AOL for Broadband might not fully support modems. That doesn't really
explain the MSN problem though. You might check in the Network
properties and the IE settings to ensure that the cable configuration
is completely gone. I'd suggest removing and/or disabling the network
card in Device Manager.
