You are right, the Crown owns everything, but the freehold has a value to us
whether we bought the freehold with lottery winnings or just by hard work. I am
sure that if you worked all your life and invested in nothing other than a
pension fund only to find when you retire someone else has been credited with
your pension, you would feel pretty aggrieved. Similarly if you bought the
biggest property that you could afford the mortgage payments on 30 years ago
with the intention of selling the property and retiring to a smaller property
with a handsome windfall from the rise in property prices, you would feel
equally aggrieved to find that someone had diddled you out of your property
through land registry incompetence. I think that if the crown decided to revoke
all freeholds there might be some civil unrest.

With best wishes
Paul
