With respect to doing a regular event at Mustang Library, the challenges are
primarily hours and lights.

Hours:
Monday - Thursday: 9 am – 8 pm
Friday & Saturday: 10 am – 6 pm Sunday: 1 pm – 5 pm

Last Friday at Mike's, we weren't ready to go until 6:30 pm and that start time
will likely get later as the hours of darkness shorten. We will therefore be
highly dependent upon the Library's continued enthusiasm to publicize such an
event as an after-hours treat. We would get some passers-by on the weekdays,
but are weekdays a problem for PAS members? When we operate after the library
closes, will we still have access to facilities we might need... bathrooms,
electricity etc.?

With respect to lights, Mustang is not a good location with lots of lighting
from the big shopping center across the street and major thoroughfares nearby.
I'm guessing that it would be difficult to find anything without a goto or
electronic setting circles. On the bright side (no pun intended) that also
means the location is highly accessible and near lots of people who would not
have to drive far to get to us.

There are two libraries nearby (Palomino and Arabian) where the lighting is
much better. However, I'm not sure how popular they are or how enthusiasticly
they would support us. Maybe we could alternate locations on whatever
frequency we might decide to do.

Since I generally show up with a photographic kind of setup which uses filters
and software to get rid of light pollution, the ambient lighting wouldn't
bother me. Nevertheless, I would hate for the club to have to depend on me
since I travel quite a lot and seem to frequently be out of town when we have
events.

That said, I'm interested and would be happy to support the event when I'm in
town and could rearrange my schedule to some extent in order to attend. It's
nearby and if we reach a variety of ages, that would be well worth the effort.

I suggest that instead of setting up a recurring program, we tell the library
that we'll be more than happy to do one night as a trial run to see how things
work out and make no commitment beyond that.

With respect to money, I'm happy to leave that decision up to others. I don't
need gas reimbursement since I'm only a couple of miles from there, but I
understand that others need to travel and we might be concerned about setting a
precedent. The club is welcome to have whatever my share might be.

I hope these comments are helpful.

Good afternoon PAS Members,

A library in Scottsdale Mustang Branch wants to know if PAS
will do star parties at their location to inspire the kids who come
to the library, in the fields of science.

Question is, do we do this type of event free of charge, or
do we consider it to be like a Public school and ask for
$25/scope, 2 scope minimum for 2 hours or so of time?

I would want to know what you think of this before setting something
like this up and the group decides there should have been a charge.
Give me your input.

Pima and Shea is where this particular branch is located.
I"d be willing to do the star party, if the right things were provided...
like notices to the patrons that we are there, and we want people to come
look through our scopes. And doing it no more than once a month, due
to all the other events we have going on.

Ideas are welcome. Start a conversation about this and i will decide
what to do from there. Thanks for your input.

Terri

Good friends are like stars. You don't always
see them, but you always know they are there.
