Man, only one story? I'm sure most of us have more than one to tell.. I'd say my favorite has to be during an application upgrade - previous version of our application was not very PCI-compliant, stored credit cards, track 2 data, you name it. The new version of the app was built on 10g rather than 9i, so to try to kill all birds with one stone, we came up with a process to export, wipe the server (DOD-strength-overwrite of the datafile directory), install 10g, import. Well, soon someone decided to script it. Everything looked fine during the migration / upgrade, but first reboot post-upgrade, when Oracle was down and nothing was holding the datafiles, the DOD-overwrite finally managed to wipe the location. Unfortunately, his script included the 10g datafile location, not the 9i datafile location.... As one component of research, I'd like to get some input from you! One minute, two sentences. First sentence: describe what went down. Second sentence: describe why. (I have to categorize all of these.) Everyone should have at least one downtime story so I'm hoping for a lot of feedback! Answer about any technology - database, operating system, etc. Thanks! -Jeremy -- Jeremy Schneider Pythian Consulting Group Chicago +1 312-725-9249 http://www.pythian.com -- //www.freelists.org/webpage/oracle-l -- //www.freelists.org/webpage/oracle-l
