What Mark said. I simply do not see home theaters designed with the
kind of viewing distances you claim.
What Mark said was that people won't sit at "optimal" viewing distances, but
rather according to how furniture is arranged. Which could just as easily be
less than optimal, as more than optimal.
The "reality is" that TV viewing distances have remained largely the same (say
6-15 ft or so?), even as screen sizes have been steadily increasing. So,
whenever the roll-up screens will become available - I saw an article from 2004
predicting these will soon be available - viewing distance in terms of screen
heights will have to be updated once again, Craig. Bring it down to 2 screen
heights, and 4K becomes reasonable.
I've also read that having a screen that touches the floor brings with it a
whole new dimension of realism, of "being there." More cool stuff to wow the
customers at Best Buy.
But the real issue here is how much value consumers place on this kind
of TV viewing experience.
Let me remind you of your proclamations about how HDTV would be beyond the
reach of the common man. Craig, you were even using the same dollar figure!
Might have been $20,000 as opposed to $30,000, but we've had some inflation.
Obviously, over the next two to three decades, today's prices are of zero
interest.
It's great to have lived through the complete transition from square CRT analog
TV to flat panel, wide screen HDTV. Why? Because all the nay-saying sounds even
more lame than it did last time around, and the words used in nay-saying
haven't even been updated! These arguments might sound novel to millennials.
But this is all good, right? Why fight it? To accommodate a display that
reaches the floor, I'll have to move my audio gear over to a side, as opposed
to under the TV set, but I'm sure I can manage!
