You mean like speakers and audio playback devices?
No, although audio will advance too. You can easily see the difference between
2K and 4K, as I already said, in terms of perceptibility of pixels at different
viewing distances. Just go into any store that sells TVs, even Walmart.
Bottom line, the major breakthrough in the way we watch entertainment
TV WAS NOT HDTV.
Just because more than one thing changes doesn't mean that your favorite change
is the only one that matters. Even mobile displays are HD these days. HD has
become the norm.
Quadrophonic sound offered a better music experience. It was not a
market success, but surround sound has achieved success in home
theater systems.
Not that the comparison is valid, but your example was a bad one anyway. 5.1 is
quadraphonic, with a center front speaker and a subwoofer added. Most of the
problem with multichannel audio is that it's a hassle to set up, although
wireless speakers of today make the job a little easier. (Tangentially, this is
why I don't see "immersive sound" as making such a practical difference. Its
impact depends entirely on your home audio setup. Immersive will make the best
use of whatever you already have. Seems to me that 5.1, or at best 7.1, is the
most you'll see in 99.99% of homes, and ATSC 1.0 already does 5.1. Not many
homes have 24 speakers.)
Pick an argument Bert. You've been telling us for months that 4K is a
done deal.
Yes it is, and how long did it take for you to get out there, Craig, and see
for yourself? 4K is a done deal, never mind whether the popular screen sizes
"need 4K" or not *today*. I've posted articles that say that 2K displays are
being phased out. Again, whether 4K is "needed" or not.
I guess Bert would like us to ignore all of the Portrait oriented
video we see these days, shot on smartphones.
Are you joking? It sucks! Some TV stations even tell people to take video
holding their smartphone horizontally. What you call "portrait oriented video"
is the result of cluelessness, not something intentional. It's awful.
Bert is clearly confused. He tells us that at the size most consumers
are buying 1080P is adequate.
An example of how excrutiatingly difficult it is to get a point across to
Craig, eh?
So, in the '90s your were arguing that HD was out of reach. It was impossible
to make you understand that you were just looking at a snapshot in time, and
that HD was intended for the masses. Then much more recently, you began arguing
that 4K displays were out of reach. Incredibly, you kept arguing even after 4K
displays were on store shelves, priced in the 100s of dollars! It took one
attempt after another to get you out there and have a look for yourself!
Now you are arguing that viewing distances of 2 screen heights, or maybe less,
are unrealistic. So tell me, who continues to be confused, Craig?
