It would not be for free. The cable company charges a basic rate for the local 
OTA channels, so you're still paying them. And they might even charge extra for 
the digital tier, which would be needed for the HD local channels. I think this 
varies.

If cable used clearQAM, it would not cost them havcing to supply the STB. On 
the other hand, they might prefer the infinite revenue stream generated by all 
the STB rentals.

But I'm sure that Tom will do what you suggest. Put up his own antenna and be 
independent. He ahs done so in the past.
