*SAS ANKENY NWR FIELD TRIP SUMMARY*
For today's Salem Audubon birding field trip at Ankeny NWR, Barbara, Fred,
Kay and I were joined by three birders who have not been on one of our
field trips. The weather was windy and cold with temperatures between 43
and 50 degrees but it felt colder. We made nine stops around the refuge
with the most productive one being the Pintail-Egret Marsh Boardwalk. We
identified (saw or heard) 43 species.
*Most notable sightings:*
· Four *Bald Eagles *which were at Eagle Marsh, Rail Trail, near the
railroad track off Buena Vista Rd. and at the Willow Tree parking lot;
· Saw five other raptors including *American Kestrel*, *Northern
Harrier*, *Red-tailed
Hawk*, *Peregrine Falcon* and *Turkey Vulture*. Two of the Red-tailed
Hawks were very dark so there was a lot of discussion on whether either of
them were a *Harlan’s Red-tailed Hawks*. We saw both the male and
female *Northern
Harrier*;
· There was a *Belted Kingfisher* that we heard at the Pintail-Egret Marsh
Boardwalk;
· Observed three woodpeckers including *Downy*, *Acorn* and *Northern
Flicker*. An apparent pair of *Downy Woodpeckers* was seen at the
Pintail-Egret Marsh Boardwalk;
· We got an excellent look at a couple of *Ruby-crowned Kinglets* at
Pintail-Egret Marsh Boardwalk. At one point one of them showed their ruby
red crest;
- There were a couple of interesting *Song Sparrows* at
Pintail-Egret Marsh Boardwalk. They showed a lot of gray and reddish color
in their feathers that gave a nice contrast;
· There were numerous *Yellow-rumped Warblers *at the Pintail-Egret Marsh
Boardwalk. Most of them were of the Myrtle Warbler race.

a SAS-Shorts field trip to Cascades Gateway Park on *Wednesday, March 30th
at 9:00 a.m.* Meet at the park at the parking lot. The next main field
trip will be Minto-Brown Island Park on *Monday, April 4th at 7:00 am.* *Note

for the workshop. We will have short field trip to look for raptors at
Fairview Wetlands after the workshop.
