*SAS ANKENY NWR FIELD TRIP SUMMARY*
*November 14, 2018*
For Wednesday's Salem Audubon birding field trip around Ankeny NWR, Fred
and Kay were joined by eight (8) other birders. The day’s weather was
chilly, mostly dry but cloudy. The temperatures ranged from 41 degrees to
48 degrees. Western Bluebirds were a treat as well as numerous raptors.
They identified (saw or heard) 54 species.
*Most notable sightings:*
· The shorebirds seen included *Killdeer*, *Least Sandpiper*, *Wilson’s
Snipe*, *Great Blue Heron,* *Great Egret*, *Long-billed Dowitcher* and *Greater
Yellowlegs*. There was also some *Tundra Swans*;
· A great find was four (4) *Western Bluebirds* as well as a *Varied
Thrush*;
· There were seven (7) species of raptors including *Northern Harrier*
(3), *Sharp-shinned Hawk* (1), *Bald Eagle* (2), a *Red-shouldered Hawk*
(2), *Red-tailed Hawk* (7), *American Kestrel* (4) and one *Peregrine
Falcon*;
· Four species of woodpecker were observed including *Acorn*,
*Hairy*, *Downy
Woodpeckers* and *Northern Flicker*.

the SAS-Shorts bird walk at Fairview Wetlands on *Tuesday, November 27th at
9:00 a.m.* Meet in the ODFW parking lot located at 4034 Fairview
Industrial Dr SE in Salem. Our next regular bird walk will be on *Wednesday,
December 12th* at Minto-Brown Island Park. Meet at *8:00 AM* at Parking
Lot # 3. Please join us if you can.
