neck, contrasting sharply with black chin, throat and fore neck. Scaly
slate upperparts. Seen swimming to and fro by itself on the back section of

- Comments: "Seen with, diving and surfacing, with a Common Loon; both in
Basic Plumage. Just very slightly smaller than Common Loon at the distance
seen; Pacific Loon's bill not massive, lacking tallness, especially towards
the tip which was very fine and pointed. Head rounded, and not blocky or
flat topped like the Common. Most noticeable was the vertical line of dark
along the sides of its extended neck. From the back of its neck the dark
plumage gradually increased in darkness towards the front of its neck, then
at mid neck, with peak darkness, then a sharp contrast with the white
plumage of the forward portion of the neck. The eye of the Pacific Loon was
within the dark plumage of the head. Through the scope the scalloping of
the back could be seen."

aside from background flock of Oregon juncos feeding under the hanging
feeder. Binos revealed a junco with brown back, weakly contrasting light
gray hood. Eye plain, blackish lores not pronounced. Flanks extensively
"pinkish-cinnamon" (to borrow from Stokes' Field Guide to Birds of North
America". Pinkish tones faint but clear. Pin/kish extended to under
throat but I could never see if that was a complete wrap-around; Of the
photos I reviewed in this, the two of the "Pink-sided Group" provided by
Stokes (p694) closest in appearance v the other juncos generally. Should
note that the subject foraged more energetically, covered ground more
quickly and scratched more vigorously than the other juncos."
