over a few checklists, will attach the pidilip calls recorded during this
checklist. — Had just seen a red-dipped finch perched upon small Doug fir
of young Doug fir plantation at end of this little overgrown road , saw red
coloring on it as it flew away, could only be a Haemorhous finch or a PIGR.
— We briefly softly heard this bird prob at 12:35p and thought it was “prob
a PIGR! (vs CAFI)” and spent a while at summit trying to relocate PIGR, but
it was very quiet, and we were about to leave when Courtney returned to end
of Rd H and stayed longer for some calling GCKI, and then we heard the CAFI
doing many calls. — too bad not a PIGR (unless that one really was ... but
prob was just this CAFI) , but still, CAFI is a county bird for both of us!
and it also will be the first ever ebird record for Polk co.!!! Very cool.
We are happy we were able to get better recordings. Beautiful day up here
on summit. Not windy. Will just have to try again another day for PIGR,
GCRF, CLNU, SNBU, etc.

“Yeah. I sure did. I sure done flushed em.” — We explored Bald Mountain,
lots of point counts. — “We successfully made recordings of many Red
Crossbills, prob at least 3 types, and got to see Type-2’s foraging on
Western Hemlocks”, saw eating hemlock cones! — We saw several PISI flocks
foraging in alders, eating alder cones. — Yes, “Another undeniable
highlight was the numerous siskin flocks feeding in the alders.” — The
water drops on leaves in the morning sparkled blue. We climbed above the
valley’s fog, to sunny blue sky above 2000 ft. — We were above the
beautiful fog ocean, and could also see the ocean and Marys Peak. — 9am at
1840 ft: “Did you notice there’s frost on the ground?” “Well in other
conditions this would be a great viewpoint to see a goshawk fly by in. But
not in these conditions. Are you ready to climb above the fog?” — We
remembered to check and make sure we turned off the truck lights when we
began hike, good thing because we had left them on, would prob have had a
dead car on return! —
“We did it. We went up to Bald Mountain and saw cool birds. Success. All
these things I dream of doing and never get to actually do; it’s so awesome
when we go out and actually do them!”

because they were so quiet as so focused eating . One group was 12 or more
red birds (m) to 4 yellow (f).

times. Sounded somewhat similar to Type 3 that I'm familiar with, but not
quite right. The spectrogram appears to show calls consistent with Type
5. One or two of the birds in the flock sang a few times while they were
