Hello All,
I visited the new marsh/pond at the southwest corner of NE 158th and NE Airport
Way in Portland, Oregon yesterday around 11am. Its 6 to 12 months old, Google
Maps satellite view still shows a weedy vacant lot at that location. It must
be a water catchment basin for recent industrial development.
Anyway, there were around a dozen killdeer there. The birds were vocal, flying
around chasing, landing on the weedy mud flats. It really reminded me of a
flock of gulls feeding as the killdeer were concentrating their attention on
one shaded portion of the south bank. Wish I knew what they were doing. I
could not get closer to the activity without trespassing on private property.
Do Killdeer feed on carion?
I think this is going to be a productive shorebird place. Most interesting a
couple days ago were a couple of backlit, mid-distance views of shorebirds that
included Killdeer. The photos I took leave me with either Dowitchers or Common
Snipe because of the long, heavy beak, size of bird and body shape. They
hunkered down when they noticed me.
Cheers
