- Comments: "An adult male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was seen feeding on
suet in Chuck Philo's yard at ~1515. It was first seen by Chuck on
December 7th in the afternoon. It has been seen every day since. Today,
it flew in and landed on the maple tree at the feeder site before moving
onto the suet feeder. The suet feeder is uniquely setup to deter access to
some birds particularly Steller's Jays. The suet is encased in a small
plywood box except for the 3/4" hardware wire mesh bottom (patent pending
:-). The suet box is attached to a wooden post about 4-5 ft. above the
ground. The post has sheet metal on its sides to prevent animals from
climbing it but the wood is exposed about 10 inches below the suet box
allowing woodpeckers to perch and feed. The set-up can be seen in some of
the photos posted. The suet box design seemed very effective and the YBSA
fed without competition from any other birds.The YBSA was also seen
drilling in the maple and birch tree in Chuck's yard (photos). Overall, the
YBSA seemed quite content with the arrangement and it appears that Chuck
will have a regular visitor for a while.

finally found foraging in juniper with a flock of pygmy nuthatches between
the entrance gate and the white building.
Like a ruby-crowned kinglet, but with broader eyering and a pale lore,
stout bill, blue legs, no black stripe behind wingbars, stockier with more
careful methodically foraging habit."

- Comments: "In ponderosa pine and juniper with a mixed flock of Pygmy
nuthatches and mountain chickadees. Similar appearance to a ruby-crowned
kinglet, but with no dark patch below the second wing bar, a flattened
white eye ring, a thicker, hooked bill, and overall color more olive green
tinged than yellow green tinged. Well seen, with Coleen Pidgeon, Bob
Authier and Evan Thomas. Evan got photos."
