out on ice of Agency Lake, about 100 yards or so out, near Seven-mile Canal
Bridge, and thought that they could be Trumpeter Swans due to bill shape,
but decided to default to Tundra Swan. Later, while returning, and while
passing the group, about 10 more swans were flying in and the one(s) on the
ice "bugled" the call of Trumpeter Swan. I recognized the call and heard it
twice. I was not sure if one bugled twice, or if 2 bugled once. The
incoming swans landed further out, and were silent. I got some distant
photos of the 3 swans, with at least 1 being a Trumpeter, (I believe all
three were Trumpeter due to same sizes). I suspect that the incoming 10
swans were Tundra Swans as they did not land with the Trumpeter(s). I don't
know if they would have, if Trumpeters have strong family links and don't
necessarily have large flocks, I don't know. So, because I was not certain
about many of the swans I decided to call one a Trumpeter, and the
remaining swan sp. , since both species, Tundra and Trumpeter, were likely
present. After viewing the images it appeared that the far right bird in
the group of three was noticeably larger than the swan to its left, or the
middle swan. The furthest left swan's size could not be accurately
compared."

- Comments: "Walked almost physically into one point blank in a dense
plantation. I was watching my footing and I noticed fresh bark flakes on
top of the snow; I glanced up and the bird was three feet from my face; I
made the ID instantaneously. Adult male, basically jet black overall
(including center of back, where most small woodpeckers show white).
Extremely striking white panel on wing, two stripes on face, and small red
patch on throat. Most obvious candidates for confusion are probably BBWO
and RNSA; BBWO eliminated by absence of barring on flanks and red (not
white) throat; RNSA would show much more pale coloration on wings, back,
and flanks, and ought to have an obvious red crown."

Eliminated similar sounding Horned Lark by flight pattern and shape of
bird. Second bird , seen along road very near to Seven-mile Canal Bridge,
flew up from road in front of me, and I noticed whitish outer tail feathers
(retrices); landed back down, bobbing and walking very short distances and
pecking at low foliage or ground. Very grayish olive green overall;
streaked breast, pale buffy supercillium, pale facial area. Size: larger
than House Finch and a longer tail, smaller than a blackbird, slimmer"

- Comments: "Lifer #282! Continuing bird seen earlier in same location by
Aaron Beerman and Bill Tice a few days ago. It was exactly where reported.
(45.757587, -122.784656) . Clear white eye-ring, heavily streaked back,
white underbelly. Photos included.
It was audible as I approached, along with several other Sparrow species
and Juncos in the same big blackberry bush on the South side of Rentenaar
Rd. It took some patience and psh'ing to get it to come to the top of the
bush for photos for about a minute. Once visible, it was calm and less
flittery than the Juncos that wouldn't hold still. Eventually it retreated
back into the bush, and continued its high pitched chirps."
