could clearly see him swimming towards the bridge. He was gorgeous with big
orange sail fins on his back, streaked with orange cheeks, small red bill
with a whitish tip. He was pretty feisty to make sure that he received
some cracked corn feed that some park visitors were feeding the ducks."

I watched a hawk flying in a straight line in my field and I know it was
going to fly past my house and luckily I was able to grab my camera, rush
outside and grab pics just thinking it was another Red-tailed. Photos show
a Red-tail with a very dark, blobby bellyband, whitish throat, lack of
barring on bellyband and legs, and white uppertail coverts, all very strong
features supporting subspecies abieticola. However, the rufous tones to the
underwing coverts, white breast and non-prominent breast streaking on the
sides do not support abieticola or at least a pure abieticola.
Mike Borlé stated "This bird strikes me as a western-ish northern or a
northern-ish western for the same reasons noted above. It’s notable that
the throat looks white in addition to the breast." After several hours of
discussion with these individuals, it was deemed that despite this being a
very abieticola-looking individual, it should be ebirded as
calurus/abieticola.
I might also suggest to add this slash to the filters (1 or 2 individuals
for winter months) as raptor expert/ebird admin Brian Sullivan has stated
in the past that "In all likelihood abieticola winters sparingly throughout
the West, probably similar to harlani in this regard.""

Falls trail, shortly before viewpoint intersection, 11:20 am. Recorded, saw
pretty well but without good light. Long bill. Bright white throat and
upper breast contrasting strongly with brown plumage, tail and sides
reddish brown"

side as I drive by. Solid gray body, dark wings with white flashes, white
on the outer tail feathers. Perched at ten feet as I slowly drove by. Came
back later and was eating old apples at nearby 8725 Suber Rd. County first
for me. Poorly digiscoped photos obtained."
