The species has been on the Oregon coast for nearly 50 years. I
first saw one at the island of timber on Bayocean spit,Tillamook with Fred
Ramsey on the 1976 CBC. Dave Irons and team saw one at Oceanside, Cape
Meare's flip side, on another mid 70s CBC. The isolated forest at Bayocean
is miles from a human habitation. Anna's Hummingbirds colonized the Oregon
Coast decades ahead of Scrub Jays, and with much less dependence on humans.
About six years ago there were single digit temperatures in the
Willamette Valley the first week of December. Apparently some of the
Anna's Hummingbirds in Bend survived that. Conditions at sea level in
southeast Alaska presumably never get that extreme.
