Is there a USB port on your wireless router that you can use for your printer? It sometimes make it easier to set it up if the printer is plugged into the router, rather than a separate Mac, even if the Mac is on all the time and set to share the printer. Another option might be to delete the printer from the choices available to your MBP. After that is done, then have it browse for a new printer, which it should find using Bonjour (in other words, automatically).
