Yup. Opening the merge document where all the fields reside with the
brackets. Once a merge is completed and printed, we don't save the
result. /g

Are you reopening the merge document where you see all the fields?
That's the one that maintains the link to the query...not the one with
the actual data in it.

When you finish the merge, you should have two documents...the one that
shows the field names in brackets...like <address> and the one that
actually shows the results of the merge...it's the one with the field
names in it that maintains the link to the query....You just open that
and run the merge again...just the last step where you click "merge" and
the document will be populated with the latest data in the query.
