Your copy of your present version does entitle you to download patches,
security hotfixes and updates as well as add-ins, etc. The only things you
can't download are the Version Upgrade or the Full Package. Also, there
are different prices for Full Version and for Upgrade which answers both
of your picques about the product you purchase.

The other alternative is to do things which force Microsoft to be even
more competitive like installing and using StarOffice...but there's a cost
for you there, too. Whenever I've grumbled about the cost of this and
that, the words of an old f**t who was obnoxiously trying to help me out
with my complaints said, simply, "You wanna play? You gotta pay!"
I didn't find it too helpful at the time, and I still don't, but his point
was valid.<g>
