Yep, that's an issue. I think they are aware of it and that's why the footprint is expanding into more and more diverse markets. What is an X-Box but a device to give Microsoft a footprint in the living room as an appliance? Mine hosts private Halo parties but it also doubles as the DVD player downstairs (and it works one hell of a lot better than the Panasonic DVD system upstairs!). Linux is here and the secret that Microsoft is waiting for someone to discover is how you take something that is essentially free and make a buck from it. That's a serious question. So far, the only people making money from Linux are hardware makers, technology builders, Linux repackagers and IT geeks. There are no software development firms who exclusively develop and sell Linux solutions and are making a killing in the marketplace. Oracle may have found a solution with its Oracle RAC product but we'll have to see. Let someone discover the recipe, though, and I'd bet Microsoft gets all over it. Apple almost showed the way but even they settled on BSD as the underlying host for their traditional shell. Can you imagine if Microsoft did essentially the same thing and put the command structure and Explorer shells on top of Linux? Have you noticed that all the Linux distros are trying harder and harder to make that out of the box experience look like a Windows solution? Of course, few of them are all that attractive because Windows users can't find their files ("What the hell is /dev/hda1 and why do I care about it?", said the hapless Linux newbie).
