i've been using amazon.com for several years, but i've always bought the books at the standard price.
after the long list of suggested books to read a few weeks ago on this list, i had a list of some 20-30 books i wanted to buy. so i was on Amazon this morning, and i looked into the used books at Amazon. i hadn't realized that this was so cheap.
many books sell for a dollar or less (esp. "literary" stuff). hundreds of used-bookstores around the country have put their inventory online and they are selling their books via Amazon.

You might save quite a bit more by eliminating the Amazon.com middle man. There are hundreds of used book dealers who do sell through Amazon, but this comes at a hefty premium of the price. There are other websites that list the same books from the same book dealers but for a bit less than Amazon does, and more of this goes to the book dealer rather than Amazon.

My favorite is Alibris, here:
