It does amaze me when shipping & handling comes to more than the price of
the book.

Well, that's where they're making the money. They offer the book for 50 cents to get the sale and charge $3.50 for "handling". It's about 60 cents for a book shipper carton (bought at 100 units, and probably cheaper at 1,000 or more), plus $1.30 for book rate postage, so $1.90 in shipping. Thus $1.60 in profit.
