We are considering, alla Wittgenstein, the 'logical grammar' of 'believe
in'.

One problem here is that the above allows for the variant:
"I always believed you, JL".
whereas, "I always believed Socialism" is a bit of a stretch.
Note that while 'socialism' is a common noun, "JL" isn't.
There may be other variants. Or not.
Of course, seriously, Geary makes an interesting point. By stating that he
always believed in Socialism, he means that he took Socialism as a 'creed'
(from Latin, 'credo', I believe). By now stating that he is a "real lived
rotting-tooting socialist" he means that he is _living_ the creed.
Google.com tells us that there are circa 22.700 hits for "living the creed"
-- the first page below may help. Or not.
