I've always believed in socialism, of course, but now I'm a real live rooting-tooting socialist. Geary makes an interesting philosophical point. People say, "I believe in God". Surely, the correct grammar would be, "I believe that there is a God", with "that there is a", deleted, and getting the shorter, "I believe in God" with "in" dropped in 'for good measure' (metaphorically). In the case of socialism (cfr. 'socialite'), the grammar is analogous. "I've always believed in socialism" translated as "I've always had socialist beliefs in the existence of Socialism". McEvoy may counterargue that Socialism is not God. Or not.
