There is an opinion about by some historians that Franklin Roosevelt saved capitalism with his few social programs that are now cherished, which are Socialist. Social Security and Medicare. But there are those who would repeal it if they could.

Truman was the first president to propose a national health care system. His efforts failed, among cries of 'Socialized medicine!'

Medicare was created in 1965, when LBJ signed the legislation authorizing it as part of Social Security. Truman was, ceremonially, the first to enroll.
