I doubt it. Southern California Edison (SoCalEd), based in San Diego, was the company that kicked off the disasterous electric blackouts several years ago. Its CEO was the chief architect of energy deregulation.

The Republicans promised that free-market competition would bring cheaper energy to everyone. Energy lobbyists spent over $40 million in "political donations" to ensure a correct vote.

Consumer advocates and industry experts predicted a disaster.

Calif had a reliable, functioning energy system. But deregulation destroyed it.

What happened? Quite simply: Energy companies sold their generators to out-of-state companies, such as Enron, which promptly shut off those generators to create fake shortages. Thus prices shot up to as high as $9,999.99 per megawatt. Why not higher? Because the system could only handle that many numbers. If they could, they would have charged far more. Enron shut down the state of California repeatedly and forced it to pay billions.

What to do? Stay indoors, use the air conditioning, and protest PG&E
(electric co.) if they won't give folks here a financial break.

Yesterday, the electric company in Palm Springs sent out the bills. Many were over $1,000.

Over 68,000 people called to protest the bills.
