It's fear or other irratinal behavior that can make objective analysis of
Leica's situation pointless. When panic takes over, any company can sink.

The best way to insure the future of any business, is to support it through purchases.

Art, Doug:

You are both, of course, right.

On the other hand, 30 years in business has taught me that one of the bigger mistakes one can make is to buy technology from a failing company.

To assume that Leica/Immacon will get the DM-R perfect the first time is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Even Canon, probably the leader in digital SLR's today, now has an update for the 20D available, which fixes a shutter release problem, amongst a couple of other things.

I'm quite willing to concede that the DM-R, when (if) produced will yield better photos than a LeiCanon. But, were I to buy the DM-R, I'd be investing (with memory cards and taxes) nearly $9,500 in Canadian funds. It would be the biggest camera purchase of my life and, frankly, more than I've ever spent on a car! It would tap my available funds to the limit. To have spent that much only to find that needed updates are not available would be a financial disaster, not to mention a great disappointment!

By going with the LeiCanon route, I can always sell it and move to the DM-R once the field reports are in and we see how it (and Leica) goes.

But when a company announces a loss equal to half it's value, it would be foolish to invest huge sums in a technology that will need ongoing support.

I will not hesitate to buy Leica lenses, their film cameras nor even their Panasonic built digicams. But I think it prudent to adopt a wait-and-see attitude when it comes to the DM-R.

Just my point of view.
