Hi, The primary advantage of software only solution is it can be turned off when not needed without having to tamper with hardware (e.g. trying to mechanically fit/ remove a filter). The surpise is that other vendors either have not investigated this route or have (e.g. kodak) and could not 'fix' the issue sufficienly to get good magazine reviews of their products.
