I seem to run into the orientation problem when I travel to the west coast. Causes quite a few "where the hell are you going" comments from the wife. What really gets me though is how much I do orientate myself by the lake's position Even when I'm 100 miles away from it. Face it in Wisconsin you're either heading towards the lake or towards the river. In the north south direction your going "up north or to "FIB land". Sufice it to say the I stands for Illinois The other two letters are adjectives.

the "Midwest Pond" was very disorienting! Coming from the west coast I'd grown up with the "Pond" on the west. Before encountering the "Pond" to my east I had no clue how much I depended on the ocean for geographic orientation - which was surprising because I couldn't see the ocean from Palo Alto, and in fact the SF Bay was to the east of me.
