I'm pretty sure mail on the Juno servers can be exchanged with Netscape
and other POP3 mailers, now that the servers are being administered more
leniently. But then you need to get online some other way, and these
free services are designed for consumers who don't have other access.
Juno's modems only accept calls from their user software, because they
only get paid if we see their advertisements. Even if we do, they don't
get much. They were hoping to be as well paid (CPM) as television
stations. It didn't happen.

Another question of definition. "Success" in their business is selling
millions of ads (CPM). Everyone except a few nerds and artists use
Windoze, so money spent on better operating systems is money wasted.
They don't do it for the same reason they don't write a version in
Sanskrit to go after the Brahmin market. Advertising is about mass (CPM)
not class.

Our mutual mousequaintance prefers the version that runs on the most
antique Windozers and cannot handle attachments. Almost everyone else
prefer the version I'm using, or a later version. Don't you remember
getting an attachment from me?

I also receive them. I just got a blank message from a stranger,
Subject: Classified, with a DATA.SCR file attached. Of course I didn't
open the attachment, and I'll soon delete it unseen.

If you don't pay, any photo over two Megabytes will be rejected in order
to save storage space at Juno's servers. Any combination of messages
adding up to two Megs will jam the mailbox, bouncing all further incoming
messages until you download, thus emptying the mailbox.

Free mail service is for lightweights. Which is to say, it fits me and
millions of other consumers nicely but may seriously hamper
professionals. Professional or heavy users are better off paying.
