Yes, we've found it immensely frustrating in our conversion from
WordPerfect to Word. Some things Word really does do much better, and
some it's a real bear to be able to do something you're used to doing
easily in WP.

Once you've done complex documents in both however, you'll see how
different their basic approach is to structuring a document. Once you
understand that, you start to grasp why none of the conversion utilities
do a good job. It's like those computer programs that try to translate
from one language to another; you'd think at first that would be a
reasonable enough task to program for, but, no one has come up with
anything except mediocre translators. When one thing is just too
different from another, transforming it from one form to another just
isn't as easy as people really want it to be.

We've actually decided to keep WP around to access our library of
perhaps 100,000 wp documents; however, we're creating all our new
documents in Word.

This is pretty hard on our users who need to use something out of the
archives to help them create a new document, especially if their an
attorney or a CPA or whatever, but not an administrative assistant.
We've had a *lot* of experience in trying various techniques in moving
data from WP into Word, including buying a third party conversion
package rated the best of its kind, but it just sometimes doesn't work,
and we're forced to tell the person that we can get some of the text
itself, but all the complex formatting will just have to be redone.
Sometimes that formatting carries as much of the information in the
document as the text itself (for instance, we have legal documents with
passages purposely struck out but left in place to show what was
deleted, while others are underlined to show that they were added).
Word treats strikethrough in a very funny way which causes it not to
copy the strikethrough attribute when you're cutting and pasting text,
so you may end up with the text of your document, but no record of what
was officially deleted from the bill or the law or the contract.
Without careful proofing, this makes the conversion process almost worse
than useless when this kind of thing happens as the actual meaning of
the document is changed, without the end user necessarily even knowing
about it.

Well, guess I'll stop whining and get back to work.
