Hi Jerry,

I'm still investigating these things because I've really decided it would be
a fine idea for me to have a *real* dictionary on hand again, not just make
do.

I'm still thinking about the Webster's referred to here, but also looking at
a Houghton Mifflin version of the American Heritage Dictionary of the
English Language, which Pranav has pointed to, and which is linked from
definitions on the dictionary.com site from the American Heritage
definitions I almost always prefer there.

But I'm a little unclear as to the chosen media for these two dictionaries.
Whereas the Webster's is on CD, the American Heritage is something you
download and put onto your hard drive. I read some notes there saying that
if you're online when you're using it, you can avail yourself of features
like its vocal reading of words, and even some illustrations. Yippee. Not.

So far as you know, is the CD approach to be preferred to the download one?
Also, if you have the CD and don't wish to have to insert it every time you
need it, I suppose you're permitted to simply copy it to a folder you create
for it on your hard drive?.

Thanks. Just trying to figure out how these things work.

I believe you meant Francis. The one I'd talked about was the Random
House Webster's Unabridged at
http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/results.pperl?title_auth_isbn=webster%27s+unabridged+dictionary

It is the CD version, about $20 and the equivalent of the 2,256-page
hardcover.

Jerry,

The description states:
How does this compare to a standard dictionary? Well, a standard
desktop dictionary contains about 110,000 words with definitions and
is about 800 pages.
However, the UTD also includes sentences using each defined word in
context, for every "sense (meaning)" of the word.

PL] Is this feature in the demo? If yes, I cannot find it. Try the
following words
hubris
Bowdlerize
definition
exquisite

Finally, the lookup word combo box does not seem to support copy and
paste? I have tried pasting text into it and nothing happens.
