Anita, So, step 2. Before I do my best to explain how I start my preferred version of JAWS, I need to mention a couple of points. First, I am not running JAWS 7 until Freedom Scientific comes out with a later version with all the problems corrected. So my latest version is 6.2. If you want to start with version 7, someone running that version may need to intercede. It's possible that JAWS is now named something like "Freedom Scientific JAWS 7," so when I say "j" below, you'll need to type "f." But the following procedure may still work. The second point to make is that you can locate JAWS in the start menu by pressing "p" for programs" and then "j" for JAWS." Since you are running more than one version of JAWS, pressing "j" a second time will bring up another version of JAWS. If you have a third version there, a third "j" will bring up that third version. With that as background, here's how I would switch to a version of JAWS not currently running. 1. Go to the start menu with control-escape or the Windows key, then press "p" for programs. 2. Press "j" for JAWS. JAWS will announce which version that will open. "If you have another program beginning with j, that program might appear here. Keep that in mind for counting purposes.) 3. Press "j" again and listen for the next version number. Press "j" again in case another program is running with the first letter "j." 4. Note which press of "j" brings up the JAWS version you want. Was it the first, the second, the third? This is critical. 4. Press escape twice to make sure you've exited the "Programs" and "Start" menus. 5. Now close JAWS. This will end speech, so make sure you've followed the steps above. You close JAWS by pressing insert-F4 and confirming with the enter key. 6. Press control-escape. Then press p. 7. Press j the number of times you need to reach the JAWS version you want. If that version came up with your first press of "p" while you were testing, that's all you need, one press of j. If it was the second press, do it twice now. 8. Once you've pressed "j" the right number of times, press enter. 9. Now press j again. do this even if you're looking for JAWS 7 and FS now names it Freedom Scientific JAWS 7." JAWS should come up speaking. 10. go to the JAWS menu with insert-j and arrow up to "About." Press enter and listen for the version number. It ought to be the one you want. 11. Then follow the steps I outlined in my previous message to make this version your default. This is a lengthy list, but it ought to work. I hope it does for you. If you can't get speech to work after taking these steps, the simplest way to get it back is to reboot. In that event, maybe someone on the list will have an alternative approach. Otherwise, you'll need to ask for sighted assistance. In that case, close JAWS with insert-j and enter. Then have the sighted person go through the Programs menu and click on the desired version of JAWS. Then press j to get it running. At that point you'll be able to follow the steps I outlined in my previous message to make this version of JAWS your default. Anita ----- Original Message ----- From: Adrian Spratt To: jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Friday, January 20, 2006 11:05 PM Subject: Re: Installing JFW. Hi Anita. The way I make my preferred version of JAWS the default is to make the PC start with that particular version. This requires that you determine which version of JAWS is currently operating. As I believe Jerry Cox suggested earlier, you find that out by going into the JAWS menu with insert-j and then arrowing up to "About." Then press enter. The version you're in will be announced. If that's the version you want, press escape to get out of that set of menus and then press insert-j again. This time press enter on options, and again on basics. Tab through till you find something like "Start with JAWS" and press the spacebar to make the selection. Keep tabbing. Another option you'll encounter is to run JAWS from the system tray. I recommend you also check this option. If it doesn't say checked, again, press the spacebar. Then tab to OK and press spacebar. That procedure will make your chosen version of JAWS the default. If your preferred version of JAWS isn't running and you don't know how to get it going, I suggest you write again to the list. Discussing how to do that will make this long message even longer. I hope this works for you. Adrian ----- Original Message ----- From: Anita Hi List, How can one make a specific version of JFW the default, if more than one copy is installed? How can the settings be imported from previous versions? How can versions be changed, if the wrong one is coming up? That's what's happening with my JFW. Anita
