Actually the graphic arts people now recommend against the double space with
proportional fonts. IT causes what are known as rivers of white which meander
down a page. Double spacing following the period was helpful with fixed fonts
as produced on a typewriter because the thinner letters left white space in
patches which meant that the wider spaces of a double space were more easily
recognized and the appearance was not so obvious with already more white space.
So, with the advent of our more modern technology the need or desire has
changed. It was never the case for type face printing where the appearance was
more easily adjusted by the type setter according to aesthetics.
