The IE7 protected mode is off if UAC is disabled. It is based on the User Interface Privilege Isolation technology introduced in Vista to control such things as user permission levels. When Internet Explorer 7 is running in Protected Mode (which is the default in all but the "Trusted" security zone) the process runs with low rights, even if Internet Explorer is being run by an administrator. This means that even if an attacker defeated all defense mechanisms and got control of the Internet Explorer process and managed to run some arbitrary code, it would be severely limited in what it could do. Nearly all of the file system and registry would be off limits for writing, reducing the ability of an exploit to modify the system or harm your files. The code wouldn't have enough privileges to install software, put files in your Startup folder, hijack browser settings, or do other nasty things. If you download and use TweakUAC you will be able to run UAC in its quiet or silent mode. In such a mode, you keep all the positive effects of UAC, such as
Internet Explorer operating in the protected mode, applications starting without the administrative privileges by default, etc. The only thing that gets changed is that you will no longer see the infamous "Windows needs your permission to continue" messages whenever you attempt to make a change to your Vista configuration, or when you run a program that needs administrative rights. If any one decides to download and install TweakUAC, the check mark in the license agreement screen is not labeled and so you will need to find the unlabeled graphic beside the "I agree" choice and simulate a left click on the graphic. In the following window JAWS might tell you that the selected choice is one of one, but if you use down arrow you can move to other choices. One of those choices is to run UAC in silent mode.
I think that keeping UAC's and protected mode security in place is a good idea, but you can get rid of the "Windows needs your permission" messages by running TweakUAC in silent mode. Any one interested can download the file at:

I've re compiled scripts here with UAC on and no issues either. but haven'tactually ran script manager. FS will simply have to fix the problem if there is one because turning off UAC is in my humble opinion not a good idea. I wrote and compiled some scripts just yesterday with uac running, there was no prob, only, compile complete.----- Original Message ----- From: "Scott Erichsen" <pianoman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <jawsscripts@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, April 19, 2008 5:19 AM Subject: [jawsscripts] Re: Introduction and a question I personally do not have any problems with vista what so ever. I have it running on 2 machines here and it runs just fine. To use the script manager, just remember to turn the UAC (user account control) off. There is actually a way you can compile scripts without turning it off but it is a little complex. -----Original Message----- From: jawsscripts-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:jawsscripts-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of James Panes Sent: Saturday, 19 April 2008 7:10 PM To: jawsscripts@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [jawsscripts] Re: Introduction and a question Hi Jackie, Thanks very much for this information. It is good to know that it is possible to live with Vista where no other option is available. Recently, I put the question out to the list asking if anyone has had any good experience with Vista. There were several answers saying, "No.", and none saying "Yes.". I have no actual experience with it myself. Thanks again and happy hacking. I have xp but recently needed to fix a vista machine. & once I figured out what was up w/it, it wasn't at all bad. In fact, there are some features which actually make it advantageous, such as that the sound card is operational in safe mode, etc. So, just for the record, I think vista is quite accessible, especially if u turn off the annoying user control thinggie & if u understand what it's doing. Jaws has a good tutorial on accessing vista, should any1 need that. Greg, As for FS's info, I think the basics of scripting & the tutorials are all on Inthane's site--I don't know of anything that fs has on its site that isn't on the grab bag as well, but that doesn't mean there isn't something. Look at both, get whatever u need. This list is a good place to get started. On 4/18/08, James Panes <jimpanes@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:Hi Greg, Welcome to the list. The site that Jackie mentioned is good. There is also lots of info and tutorials available from the FSDN, links available on the Freedom Scientific site. Unfortunately, none of us have had much luck with Vista. XP Pro is the operating system of choice. I gather that you have a new system and did not have the opportunity to compare notes with other blind programmers before making your purchase. We are all working on improving accessibility for Vista, but it is still way behind. Happy hacking. I am using JFW 9.0 on a Windows Vista machine. I have a couple of questions: 1. Where can I get some good info on JAWS scripting? 2. When you turn the typing interrupt off even hitting the enter keywont interrupt speech. How can I change this so when the typing interruptis turned off the enter key will interrupt speech? 3. 3. Would something like this have to be application specific or could you create a script to modify the default typing interrupt?
