Wendy
I have been using an electronic labeller for about two years and have found it perfect for my needs. The one I am using is obtainable from Cobolt Systems of Norwich, I can record the type of meal and the necessary cooking times etc and can also be used to label other items such as clothes etc. The device works by recording a ten second audio message onto a small plastic card which is attached to the item. when the card is later inserted into the recorder it repeats your recorded message. I hope this may be helpful to others having these sort of problems.

Bob

David

The desserts are in smaller packs, so you probably wouldn't mix them up.
There are also some soups in small packs.

The way I know is to read the label with my Optacon, but of course, not
everyone has one of these. If you don't have any sighted help on hand it
could be a problem, but if you are a braillist you could write the meal
names on little cards and ask the driver to tell you what's what when they
deliver. You could then tape the cards to the packs. If not a braillist,
there are electronic labelling systems where you can record on little cards,
but I don't know how practical this would be.

Matthew has mentioned labelling as something they are working on with RNIB, but I don't know how they are going to solve this for those of us who can't
read large print in the normal way.

I have a freezer with several shelves, so another way you could do it is to
ask the driver to put different types of meal on different shelves. You
could have pork on one shelf, chicken on another, etc.

Any further ideas would be most welcome from other list members, not just
for this particular site, but for labelling in general. I realise this is
not a JAWS issue, so if this thread is not wanted on the list people could
perhaps join the UK access list and discuss there.

I looked at the site a few days ago and found it easy to find my way around. I sent for a brochure, and later noticed that a cd version was available, so may send for that as well. The descriptions sound fine and informative, and I will probably be placing an order. The one thing I could not find was the amount you have to spend as a minimum requirement, but that may well become more clear as and when I do my ordering. I have the latest version of jaws, so it will be interesting to see whether I can place items in my basket, or
whether I will experience the problems Wendy has had.

I probably should not comment further until I have ordered, but I do not
really think a dedicated site for the visually impaired is the way to go.
If Tesco is anything to go by, it rarely gets updated and has only a small
percentage of the offers available to others, but Tesco have now rectified
this.

I think the mp3 files is a good idea, and must congratulate Matthew on
trying to solve the problems we are having. That alone will probably
persuade me to order. Just one question though, is there any way a blind
person can identify the meal once it is taken out of the freezer? This is
probably too much to ask, but some way of knowing beef from pork or a main
meal from a dessert might save a lot of disappointment. Not sure how this
could be done, but I am throwing it in for discussion.

How wonderful and unusual to find a business so interested in improving
access. If I ever want to buy food in this way wiltshirefarmfoods will be
at the top of my list. Thank you for taking your vi customers seriously.
Best regards
Amie

Hello All,

I thought it would be easier for me to directly subscribe to the JAWS-UK
list!

I've been tackling JAWS over the last couple of days, trying to find out
where wiltshirefarmfoods.com is falling over with it. With my first
attempt I was ready to through my laptop out the window but I think I am
getting the hang of it now!

I've got a couple of questions:

1) When trying to use the site, it has become extraordinarily cumbersome.
This is because of all the extra work we've done with our marketing
agency, who insist on having lots of keywords and descriptions and text
throughout the site. I was thinking, would it be a much better idea for us
to develop a specific VI website? I often think that it's quite rude to
have "an accessible version", which in my mind implies that you're not
getting the full opportunity of the main site. What do you guys think?
Having a VI website would allow us to concentrate on making it purely
about ordering, so you'll get product headers, product descriptions and
prices, and a checkout process, without all the marketing fluff.

2) We've recently made live a Quick Order page, so customers can just type
in product codes and quantities, then checkout. However, this requires an
encyclopaedic knowledge of our product range! I'm planning this weekend to
personally record the our product listings, then split the recording into
several MP3's by meal type, like, beef.mp3, chicken.mp3, new products.mp3
and most popular.mp3 . Would this be of interest? I am imagining you could
use the quickorder function whilst having the MP3's playing in the
background in itunes or similar?

Anyway, I hope you can point me in the right direction as to what I should
be doing.

Look forward to hearing from you,
