less than 0.5 Mb in size; and reiserfs is supposed to be good at performance

This is the kind of evaluation errors that cost people their jobs. If
you knew you had a requirement for reiserfs, whatever on earth made
you choose a distribution (paying money for support) that didn't have
reiserfs support?
Alternatively, did you ask your Redhat support guy which filesystem
that they support would be ideal for your requirement?
IIRC, using a custom-built kernel would make your support contract
with Redhat null and void - all those $$$ will be wasted.
Lastly, "supposed to be good at performance" is another way people
lose their jobs by doing scratchy product evaluation. Have you tested
it the performance yourself? Does it play nicely with all the other
device drivers you need?
