Hi,
When you do a kernel upgrade using your distro package
manager, do they retain the previous kernels that are
installed?
Yes They do retain the old kernel.. Atleast Ubuntu 5.10 does it and did it
for me when upgrading sometime back. Now I have compiled 2.6.16 manually and
is running good. Except for some minor errors. Will rectify it. :)

I think you will have to do a custom build of the kernel with support for
NVIDIA Graphix card. My kernel config file says that NVIDIA related Drivers
are excluded ! might be the reason.. Or even what I am talking might not
make sense.. Jus try to rebuild by including all NVIDIA related drivers.
