[Ilugc] GNU doubt

Look at what MySQL, Trolltech and other companies do, they have a dual
licensing scheme whereby they make money!

There are quite a number of links if you do some "googling" for "open
source business models"--read them.

It is NOT NECESSARY, though useful, for a company to promise
forever-existence. Borland was a good company. Starfish was too. So, just
because Philippe Kahn (wasn't that his name?) did that twice, will I lose
trust in him?

Hey, let me restate my question ya.

I love the Open Source Spirit of community development, I would like to make
a living SOLELY OUT OF IT, for I think that is as ethical as it gets, and as
clean as it gets. I am afraid though, that I can NEVER SELL software and
make REASONABLE money. You talk of hardware-support and stuff like
enhancements. But, what if my software doesn't even use much hardware other
than the core processor, which anyway is mostly backward-comp nowadays, and
what if I don't intend to do any enhancements to my product/tool unless I
make some money for its current status? I really don't get it guys. Please
help me.

As long as you were in the business you were able to earn and give service
to users.
Once you are out someone else can continue the good work.

So, if I write software SO GOOD that it doesn't need support at all,
Replacement of damaged CD's?
New hardware(there will always be new hardware)?
Enhancements?
Support does not mean just helping to install and use the software.

One more thing, no 'Business Model' works if the company isn't a 'Going

'Business Model' if you already plan to close down after writing the "SO
GOOD" super cool
software.
