If i write a program and sell it to you for hundred, and you make a
slight change and start selling it for 90(as u have the freedom to), I am
never going to be making any money at all. You might even put it up for
free as you have nothing to loose. What about me!!So how is it ever
possible to develop opensource software and make money.
The business model dosent work like that. You make a program., you
sell it for any price (even a million) or give away free of
charge. You promise to give support either in the form of programming
or hand-holding for a price. this is how money should be made in `Free
Software development'. The income made by selling software is not a
primary/only means of making money with software. You can provide
service for you.
When you develop a software and sell it for Rs.100 along with basic
support., if another person sells it for Rs90., the support provided
varies. If the required support is to add a customisation to the
software, definitely you can do it better than your competitor because
you are the author.
Free the code, free the user.
