True offpage is best for flat, but ports do also work. As you said,
matching the names is biggest problem, leading or trailing spaces, dashes,
etc.

It has been a while since I used capture (old Orcad) but for flat design
schematics you should only be using on or off page connectors and NOT the
ports. I believe the ports were designed to use on Hierarchy type
schematics.
The only other thing that will prevent the nets from hooking up correctly is
netnames on one page not SPELLED the same as nte names on the other pages.
Unfortunately, the software doesn't know you want to hook netname to
ntename.

i did a test update to a test board and the ports didn't work, but i
replaced the ports with off page connectors and that test went well. For
each port, I bring in a off page connector, rename the net name and then i
delete the port and connect the off page connector. Seems like there should
be an easier way to place all, but doing single replacement is working even
if it is slow progress.
