Yeah, darksword was okay, very interesting ideas, but it was lacking
something that I can't put my finger on.. and I really like those
writers.
As for Star wars, I meant that it's almost the quentessential cross
over story.. I mean.. they have blasters, starships, a planet
destroying machine..
and then there's the force which seems to work like magic, and light
sabres, admittedly, they're technology, but it's still swordplay, and
bow casters and Ewoks.. I love ewoks. grins.
Incidentally, since we've run into the pasture on the side of the path
that was this topic,
another book series that does a good job of blending fantasy with
mondern day is the Drezdin Files by Jim Butcher. Wizardry and swords
mixed with martial arts and guns. Usually these things aren't my
thing, because it takes a lot of skill to do it right, Star Wars sort
of snuck it by, but I almost stopped reading Legacy of the Darksword
when I saw tanks. grins
The drezden Files is one of my favorite series though.
In terms of the game, my biggest questions would be how you would
balance the units.
I mean, an archer and a tank should definitely not have the same
range. I can see how some modern units would work, but some would
just be so immense that the thought of a knight or archer taking one
out seems to stretch things a bit for me.
I keep thinking of the poor Polish cavalry at the start of WW II.
Wonderful act of defiance, miserable at actual defense.
Luckily.. We have Wizards! grins
