I happen to prefer this method too but it's ultimately not my decision.

I would like to see us skip over D6 and go straight to 7 once it's been
tested and a good amount of modules have been updated to support it. I don't
keep an eye on Drupal's activities so I'm not familiar with the D7 timeline
but it might be worth the wait (I'm more of a joomla fan boy).
