- The deer tick in its nymph stage (also called seed ticks) often can be mistaken for a freckle or a speck of dirt. (Taken from a web site on Mo State Park Ticks). Bernie, I agree that the bites are mostly chiggers. I just ran a couple of thoughts together. I was more curious about the insects I saw crawling on me. To give a comparison of how small they were, imagine sharpening a pencil as sharp as you can possible get it & then make a dot on a piece of paper with it & you'll come close to the size of these things.
