How is that not trying to kill it? Who wants to use the old desktop
when there is a newer flashier version? End users don't want the old,
they want the new, and the new doesn't support up to date OpenGL. if

OpenGL isn't supported to its newest versions, is slower, etc, who
would say to users, "Um, you gotta turn off the newest stuff, enable
the old desktop, just to play our game and have good performance."

I see Microsoft doing what they do best, pushing their own standards
on the rest of the world, all packaged up in their OS. And you know
what? Yes, this is the best thing to do if your Microsoft. It is also
very bad for competition

Thats what I would do if I was Microsoft. Its their OS and they are taking a risk.
If users really dont like it then they will complain/leave, as will developers.
Users will complain if their OpenGL apps dont work as good, and they will complain if there are less games available for PC because OpenGL software developers dont support Vista.
If developers dont like it they will stop supporting vista or hack better support if it is really worth it.

I can see people hacking Vista to get more performance from opengl applications (maybe being able to disable the advanced windowing shit while your application is loaded etc then restoring it when your application closes)

OpenGL developers could always create their own new vista like desktop using OpenGL, as an alternative to the new MS one.
And if they dont, then there probably wasnt much demand for it in the first place.

Im a fanboi of OpenGL as well (as a programmer) but as a gamer, I couldnt care less what is driving things in the background. As long as its running sweet.
