I have to say that I do not understand this insistance by some people on
reading books in the order they were written. Readers might like to do
this, but authors certainly do not write the books in sequential order.
There are many examples where an author has a reappearing character or set
of characters, but the books do not go together chronologically. Just to
take one example, particularly for Sandra's benefit. Lee Child's Jack
Reacher books have at least one which jumps back ten years or more, "The
enemy I think it is called. Would you therefore read that one which was
around umber 8 in the series first? Elizabeth George also wrote one of her
Lynley and Havers books which took place four years before her previous one.
Reginald Hill has done something similar, as has that author who does the a
is for ... and b is for ... series. Sue Grafton, is her name.

If the novels are any good at all, then they stand alone. The crime
committed should always be more important than the Detective. If it is
possible, then I read in sequence, but most of the time I get hold of books
as I can, and if that means reading number ten first, then so be it.
