Hi I've just finished the second of Anne Perry's Inspector Pitt books. I find these fascinating. They are set in Victorian London (1880s) and the detection is often hampered by manners and the conventions of the day. I think she has done her research really well and manages to depict the world as it was pretty well. I'm listening to the third of Christian Jacq's Ramasees II series - The Battle of Kadesh. Jacq's style is interesting The Narrative is in the past but conversations seem to have an immediacy that is often lacking. How much of this is down to the translation I am not sure. He also has an interesting way of moving the stories forward. Often new, usually minor, characters are introduced at the beginning of a chapter they play their part and then vanish. It usually takes me a while to work out where the scene fits into the story and they often prove to be the start of a twist or turn in the plot. They are epic stories told in short books. The next book I listen to will be Dan Brown, I have been gifted it, and asked for my thoughts so I will have to read it. They say you should never look a gift horse in the mouth but I'm not sure about this one. The last Dan Brown was more than a little over the top. So far I have managed to avoid reviews of this one.
