in OP. The background seems intrusively "pixellated" (if I'm not
talking nonsense), as though the wee Nigerians were on a background of
embossed wallpaper.

It is common for images to look poor on screen but be OK when printed. The cause is that they have a lot more pixels than the screen and a rough (but fast) method is used for scaling them to display on screen. When printing things are different.
