Area(s) of practice: Family Law, including divorce, custody and
visitation, child support, spousal maintenance, adoption, and paternity;
makes up approximately 3/4 of my practice. The other quarter is primarily
guardianship/conservatorship work.
Any trainings in Collaborative Law: I was first trained in collaborative
team divorce in May 2000. Since then, I have attempted numerous trainings
on collaborative practice as well as on how to reduce the acrimony in high
conflict cases.
What is your interest in Collaborative Law: I have always looked for
"win-win" solutions in my work, even before transitioning to private
practice. Collaborative Law helps achieve this for divorcing parties and
their children. For that reason, I obtained training in the collaborate
process and joined the Collaborative Law Institute shortly after learning of
its existence.
I believe the best outcomes for people can be achieved by avoiding, as much
as possible, the finger pointing and mudslinging that is so common in
litigated divorces. Particularly where the parties have (either minor or
adult) children, it is unlikely that their children will be best served if
their parents divorce in a way that destroys any possibility of positive
interactions in the future. Where children are involved, the family changes
but continues to exist. Highly contentious litigated divorces too often
waste the parties' financial resources and leave the children stuck in an
uncomfortable position.
