Area(s) of practice: Primarily collaborative family law
Any trainings in Collaborataive Law:
3 in 2003: (1) 2 days in Ithaca, NY, basic training (2) 2 days in Rochester,
NY, interdisciplinary (3) 2 days in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, jointly
attended by Canadian and US attorneys.
What is your interest in Collaborative Law? I am reopening my law practice
specifically for the purpose of practicing collaborative family law. I was
admitted to New York State bar in 1978. I worked as law clerk in NY appellate
and trial courts for about 13 years, including court with heavy matrimonial
caseload, for which I mediated settlements, researched contested issues,
advised court as to outcomes in contested matters, and processed default
divorces. For the next 5 years I was in private general practice with emphasis
on family law including court appointed law guardian work. For the next 5
years I left active practice of law to teach elementary school children in
urban setting. I am returning to active practice of law specifically for
purpose of practicing collaborative family law and helping to establish it in
Rochester, NY, area where we have large and active professional collaborative
family law organization: Association of Collaborative Family Law Attorneys. I
have not yet had my first collaborative law case. I am working with other
attorneys who are at beginnings of building a collaborative law practice. We
have many attorneys who are able and extremely interested in collaborative law,
and we have the support of the local bar. The big question is, how do we get
collaborative clients? More experienced collaborative attorneys are
recommending that we work with regular clients who come in the door for
divorces. However, that does not work for those of us who are at the beginning
of building our practices and don't yet have clients of any kind coming in the
door. I see this issue of incorporating new attorneys into collaborative
network, and helping them get clients, as vital for survival of collaborative
law.
